Henry Arnett Mitchell, 69, of San Mateo, entered the sunset of life on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Baptist South Medical Center, Jacksonville. A native and lifelong resident of San Mateo, he was the son of Lee Walter Mitchell and Amy Jones, born on Wednesday, June 27, 1951. He was educated in the Putnam County School District and a graduate of Palatka South High School, class of 1971.

On November 10, 1971, Henry was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, NJ, earning the National Defense Service medal. SP4 Mitchell also served in the Army Reserve before earning an Honorable Discharge. On January 4, 1974, Henry was united in marriage to the former Patricia Williams.

His employment included Florida Packing & Provision, San Mateo and part-time cook at San Mateo Seafood where he specialized with his secret recipes for coleslaw and hush puppies. He retired as a forestry ranger with the Florida Division of Forestry after 33 meritorious years of service. Henry was a very dedicated member and trustee of New Bethel A.M.E. Church, San Mateo, formerly serving as Trustee Pro-Tem. Henry was well respected throughout the community and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Henry loved to cook, spend time with his family and was an avid gardener and landscaper. He also was the longtime, official chauffeur for Department of Transportation Commissioner, John Browning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in eternal rest by his son, Leroy Mitchell; sisters, Judy Eason, Detrich and Antoinette Mitchell; father-in-law, Roy Williams.

He leaves to cherish his memories: loving wife, Patricia Mitchell, San Mateo; 3 sons, Vincent Mitchell, Terrance Mitchell, San Mateo; Marcus (Louise) Mitchell, Palatka; “like daughters,” Tyreah Mitchell, Tiffany Mitchell, Rhylee Sapp, all of San Mateo; siblings, Nathaniel (Antoinette) Jones, Bronx, NY; Alice (Eddie) Faggins, Augusta, GA; Janett Edwards, Denise Jones, Christine Williams, Martin Ferguson, all of Miami; Renaye (Bernard) Linton, Hilda (John) Mitchell, both of Palm Coast; Dexture (Stacey) Mitchell, Interlachen; Cynthia (Micah) Hatcher, Coretta Mitchell, both of East Palatka; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Doris Parker, San Mateo; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Larry (Linda) Gilyard, San Mateo; Rashard (Tanya) Washington, Jacksonville; Roy (Lamiya) Williams, Denver, CO; special friend/dinner buddy, Elisha Miller, Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In compliance with CDC COVID-19 guidelines (including required masks) visitation of family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, August 25 and a private family, socially-distanced Homegoing Celebration with U.S. Army conducting military honors will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 26 at Flagg’s Chapel of Serenity, Rev. Charletta C. Robinson, M. Div., Pastor, New Bethel A.M.E. Church, San Mateo, is the eulogist. Friends are invited to join the family virtually via Facebook live: Flagg Serenity Memorial Chapel. Private Interment will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
