Rex D. Carter, 77, of Columbia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Dec. 11, 2020. Rex was born on Oct. 27, 1943, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He grew up in Bakersfield, California.

Mr. Carter served others throughout his entire life. First, Mr. Carter served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After his service he married his college sweetheart, Linda J. (Cauthron) Carter. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past year. He then served Kern County when he worked for, and retired from, the Kern County (CA) Sheriff’s Dept. before moving to Columbia. Mr. Carter moved to Missouri so he could step out of his backdoor and hunt. Mr. Carter enjoyed taking his boat out to Finger Lakes to enjoy the day fishing with his family. He served one last time at Lenior Woods, before he retired a second time, as he always needed to stay busy.

He is preceded to heaven by his mother and father Annie and Vernon Carter along with three brothers: Doie, Jay, and Dub (Louis) Carter and sister in law Joie Carter, and brother-in-law Albert Massey.

He is survived by his loving wife, as well as two daughters, Diana Carter of Marysville, California and Dee Brauer and husband Steven Brauer of Columbia; and his four grandchildren, Amber Smith and partner Brandy Gray of Springfield, Mo., Alicia and husband Mike Barbosa of Bakersfield, California, Justin and wife Shannon Sivils of Douglas, Ga., and Wayne Boykin of Columbia. Mr. Carter has seven great-grandchildren, (Brianna, Kimberley, Robert, Ezekiel, Kason, Axel, and Kaiden) with one great-great-grandchild on the way, Elisabetta, due in May 2021. He is also survived by two siblings: Loene Massey of Ventura, California and Luckey Carter and wife Caralyn Carter of Waldport, Oregon as well as sister-in-laws Margaret Carter of Sutter, Calif., and Mary Carter of Meridian, Calif.

There are no plans for a memorial, as he will be cremated so he can come home and be with his wife. Mr. Carter will receive his Military Honors later in the spring. For those who wish to send condolences, or make gifts in his honor, they can be sent to Linda Carter C/O Dee Brauer 3305 Clark Ln PMB 166 Columbia, MO 65202.
