Union Civil War Veteran. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of George W. and Sarah Hoffner Runyan. After receiving an education in the common schools near Mount Pleasant, Ohio (now Mount Healthy), he attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He returned to Cincinnati after the Civil War began and promptly volunteered to serve for the Union Army. Answering President Abraham Lincoln's first call for volunteers, he enlisted on April 17, 1861 and was mustered into Company D, also known as the Woodward Guards, of the 2nd Kentucky Infantry as a Private. The regiment was deployed into western Virginia and fought against Jenkin's Cavalry of the Confederate Army. Following the Western Virginia Campaign, Runyan went west with his regiment as it was attached to the Armies of the Ohio and the Cumberland to fight in the Western Theatre. Runyan fought at several major engagements including the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and Resaca. He was mustered out of the service in June of 1865 and was honorably discharged. After the war, he became a shipping clerk for a shoe company and later moved to Tennessee to pursue a business career. In 1868, he became a steamboat clerk for a company that operated on the Ohio River. In 1875, he became the captain of a wharf boat that conducted business in Illinois. A stroke in 1877 forced him to abandon his duties and return to Cincinnati. Ten years later, he became a dealer of cigars and tobacco. He died at the Soldiers' Home in Dayton, Ohio in 1917 when he was 75 years old.
