Mathilde Ludovika, Herzogin in Bayern, was the daughter of Maximilian, Herzog in Bayern, and his wife, Prinzessin Ludovica von Bayern, and a granddaughter of Maximilian I Joseph, King of Bavaria, r. 1805-1825. She was married at Munich on June 5, 1861 to Lodovico Maria, Prince of The Two Sicilies, Count of Trani, with whom she had issue. She was a sister of Empress Elisabeth, consort of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria.

She was buried in the Waldfriedhof in Munich and still is buried in that cemetery. After the period of repose of 50 (+2) years had expired in 1977 the grave was dissolved and reoccupied. The stone cross marking her grave was moved to Erlöserkirche Hedingen in Sigmaringen and is displayed there, where her daughter, Princess Maria Teresa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, the first wife of Wilhelm, Fürst von Hohenzollern, is buried. Her remains were never moved and remain at the Waldfriedhof in Munich.
