Mrs. Rebecca Walton Griest, widow of the late Major Ellwood Griest, died at nine o'clock this morning, at her home, No. 419 South Prince street. Her health had been impaired for some time, and she was confined to bed for the last three weeks, suffering with catarrh of the stomach.
Mrs. Griest was a daughter of Asa and Mary Walton and was born in West Fallowfield township, Chester county, on December 30, 1818, being consequently in her eighty-second year. She was the last survivor of a large family of brothers and sisters. Her early life was spent in Bart township and Andrew's Bridge, this county, and after her marriage on March 23, 1849, she lived in Christiana, removing to this city in 1869. Major Griest died on February 2d last, and her elder son, Frank, on March 5th following. Her sole surviving son is Hon. W.W. Griest, Secretary of the Commonwealth. A third, Asa Walton, died in infancy. Deceased was a member of the Sadsbury Meeting, Society of Friends.
The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, and the remains will be interred in Woodward Hill Cemetery. -- Lancaster New Era, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 28Aug1900, p. 2.
