Carl was a member of the Wilderness Tabernacle Church and he loved to play his guitar and sing in church. He was a member of the UMWA having retired from Consol Energy after 30 plus years in mining. He was a United States Army Veteran having served two terms during the Korean Conflict and was a recipient of the National defense Medal, UN Ribbon, and the President Sigma Rhea medals.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking. He was a volunteer ranger for the Smokey Mountain National Park for thirteen years. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Athlene Elswick and Daysi Cox; and one brother, Frank Hale.
Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of thirty years, Ruby Ratliff Hale of Oakwood, VA; six daughters, Linda (Keith) Matney of Claypool Hill, VA, Brenda Weddle of Narrows, VA, Debi (Harold) Malcolm of Salem, VA, JoAnn (Teddy) Wolford of Troutville, VA, Pam (Monroe) Hinkle of Oakwood, VA; and Ginger (Pierre) Dionne of Roanoke, VA; three sons, Bill (Kathy) Hale of Honaker, VA, Carl “Skip” (Karen) Hale of Richlands, VA and Todd (Jeanie) Ratliff of Christiansburg, VA; and two brothers, Elmer (Gaynel) Hale of Richlands, VA and Don (Evelyn) Hale of Cedar Bluff, VA.
He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews include a special nephew Chris Hale.
Funeral services for Carl Ellis will be conducted Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Keen Mountain, VA with Pastor Billy Harrison officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA.
Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Wilderness Tabernacle Church.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday until hour of service.
