Ms. Marie G Powell
March 20, 1921 – December 16, 2020

Marie Powell, a longtime resident of Colleyville, Texas, passed away on December 16, 2020. She was 99.

For 40 years, from the late 1960s through the 1990s, Marie operated AAA Animal Kennel on Glade Road. She was a lifelong member of the Fort Worth Kennel Club.

The eldest of seven children of German immigrants Otto and Emma Uhlman, Marie was born in The Bronx, NY, on March 20, 1921.

The family moved to Plainfield, NJ, a few years later. After completing training at Muhlenberg School of Nursing, Marie enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a registered nurse during World War II.

She was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, Queens, NY, where she met Aubrey Powell, pharmacist's mate; they married three months later. Aubrey shipped out on a hospital ship bound to the Pacific, and Marie was honorably discharged. She moved across the country to Childress, Texas, to live with her in-laws, whom she had never met.

After the war, she continued to work as a nurse at All Saints and St. Joseph’s hospitals in Fort Worth, and spent a long night as a Red Cross nurse caring for victims of the city’s great flood of 1949.

In 1961, Aubrey and Marie bought nine acres of tomato fields from the farmer Orville “Chicken” Hoosier on Glade Road, in Colleyville. The couple, along with the help of their two girls, built the first five dog runs of what would eventually become a 120-run boarding kennel and successful livelihood. The Powells became full-fledged dog fanciers, owning, breeding, and showing first boxers and later a variety of breeds. They both became AKC licensed professional dog handlers and traveled throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, showing dogs.

In 1979, the couple divorced, and Marie continued to operate the kennel. She was active in local government, serving on the Colleyville Planning and Zoning Commission for almost a decade beginning in 1987. At the age of 73, she ran for a seat on the Colleyville City Council, losing by less than 200 votes.

In 1998, Marie sold the kennel and moved to Flemington, NJ, where she was active in the Hunterdon County Master Gardener program and as a volunteer at the Hunterdon Medical Center. In 2008, Marie moved back to Texas. Most recently she lived at Meadow Lakes in North Richland Hills, before sustaining a fall that resulted in a fractured hip and finally slowed down what had been almost ten decades of an active life.

Short in stature and modest in demeanor, Marie was nevertheless fearless and determined, at ease escorting a 120-pound Great Dane around the show ring or serving as surgical nurse in the O.R. Her optimism and positive outlook persisted through many hardships.

Marie is survived by her daughters Ann Powell (and Barry Nass), of Brooklyn, NY, and Gail Madden (and Charles Bauman), of Forney, TX; grandchildren Stacey McIntyre, Brandy (and Blake) Hodges, Martin Madden, Jacob Nass, and Eli Nass; great grandchildren Bo Hodges, Baer Hodges, Micha McIntyre and Mikaylah McIntyre; and brother Frank Uhlman, of Buffalo, NY.

A livestream graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 26 at 3pm. For the direct link please scroll down to the Services section and click "Join Livestream" about 5-10 mins before the service starts. A celebration of Marie’s life is planned for Saturday, March 20, 2021, on the 100th anniversary of her birth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing non-endowed scholarship fund.
