Mr. Larry Brent Goodwin of Bean Station, was called home by his Lord and Savior on December 17, 2020. He was a member of The Church at Rutledge where he had developed many relationships that have carried him through the last 14 years of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Goodwin, his brother and sister-in-law of North Carolina, Barry and Deborah Goodwin, his sons, Brent Goodwin of Alabama, Whittington (Whit) Goodwin, of Texas, and his daughter, Megan Elliott (Jared)of Alabama. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren (Jacob, Lily, Gracie, Layla, Caitlyn, Eli, Collom, and Claira), many cousins, a large circle of devoted friends, and the mother of his children, Margaret Goodwin. Also surviving Larry are his step-sons, Kevin (Shannon) Barnard of Ohio, Mark Barnard, Knoxville and Donny Barnard of Rutledge along with step-grandchildren, Mitchell, Megan, Alex and Sophia Barnard and his Mother-in-Law, Betty Moody of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Goodwin, and his mother, Martha Pauline Goodwin, formerly of Rutledge.
Larry was born on August 26, 1943 in his grandmother’s home on Buzzard’s Knob in Rutledge, TN. He will be interred within sight of his birthplace at Blue Springs Cemetery in Rutledge alongside of his beloved mother and father. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and later in Titusville, Florida. He loved Florida and Tennessee and considered both places to be his home. Although he sometimes rooted for the Tennessee Volunteers, he was a lifelong and die-hard Florida Gator and Cleveland Indians fan.
Larry loved his family. He was a Christian and had a lifelong faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He loved the Lord deeply, and his family is comforted in the knowledge that he is now reunited with his parents in Heaven in the presence of the God.
Larry was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a graduate of Troy State University. Larry enjoyed an extensive and distinguished career working as an economist and budget analyst for the United States government. He served with the Internal Revenue Service and the Veterans Administration before moving to work in the United States space program with NASA. Larry served with NASA at the Kennedy Space Center, the Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Stennis Space Center, where he rose to the position of NASA comptroller. He masterfully managed huge budgets of many millions of dollars and skillfully trained many junior colleagues and coworkers to perform their jobs with excellence and integrity. Larry’s outstanding service was recognized through several awards, including NASA’s highly revered Silver Snoopy Award, given to him by NASA astronaut, Steve Oswald. The Sliver Snoopy is the highest Space Flight Awareness award given by NASA, with less than 1% of NASA employees receiving such recognition. As a part of this award, he received a Silver Snoopy pin and American flag that had flown in space on the space shuttle. He proudly displayed this and other memories and honors from his time serving his country in his home throughout his adult life. Larry was also a Freemason, in which he took immense pride.
Larry was a man of exceptional intellect, loyalty, intuition, and curiosity. He mastered every gadget and electronic component known to man and could fix any computer problem that came his way. He had an exceptionally keen wit and was a pleasure to engage with in both humorous banter and deep conversation. Larry loved reading and listening to music, favoring classic rock and the Beatles. He knew the words to a vast array of songs by heart and had an immense music collection. Larry loved to hunt for bargains and made many shopping expeditions with his wife, Donna, and his mother, Martha and they shared a love of country auctions where they would scrounge through box lots for treasures. They could often be found digging through bins and searching shelves and clothing racks at salvage centers and Hammers stores in search of the ultimate bargain. Larry also possessed an immense love of animals and had extraordinary compassion for all living things. He enjoyed many best friends of the canine genus throughout his life and is also survived by Yazoo, an African Grey Parrot, who loves to display the substantial vocabulary that he learned from Larry.
We grieve Larry’s passing and will miss him immensely. However, his family takes solace in the fact that he is in his heavenly and eternal home with Christ forever.
The family will receive friends Monday, December 21, 2020 from 10-12 pm at Smith Reagan Funeral Home with services to follow at 12 pm. Following the service the family will proceed to Blue Springs Baptist Church Cemetery for graveside services.
