Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Born in Cannonore, India and joined the British Army at the age of 14, serving in the 31st Regiment of Foot from 1838 to 1853. He moved to America during the Civil War and joined the Confederate Army in 1862. He was made 1st Lieutenant, Drill Master and Staff Officer under General P.G.T. Beauregard and was at Battery Wagner during the failed Union assault in July 1863. After the war, he moved to Branchland, West Virginia where he bought a farm. He also ran two hotels, one in Barboursville, West Virginia and one in Ironton, Ohio. He died on his farm in 1887, and was buried on 4-way road in the forks of the road. His grave was unmarked until his family wrote the Daughters of the Confederacy, who sent the marker that was placed there.
