John H. Bridges passed away peacefully at his wife’s side in his home on his 86th birthday, Wednesday, Sept. 9, in Billings.

John is survived by his wife, Ann M. Bridges; his children, John S. Bridges, of Pacific Grove, Calif. (and wife, Lorrie), Robin A. Sidders, of North Yarmouth, Maine (and husband, Greg), and Andrew M. Bridges of Grapevine, Texas (and wife, Laura); his sister, Edith Gaskill of Wanchese, N.C.; his grandchildren, Noelle Ritter, Whitney Ernest, Grant Bridges, Sean Sidders, Drew Bridges, Allie Bridges, Brian Sidders and Kyle Sidders; and his great-grandchildren, Colton Ritter and Hayley Earnest.

John was born on Sept. 9, 1929, in Zebulon, N.C., to Alvin and Lida Bridges. He married Ann Morgan in 1956. John had an ambitious work ethic and served with GMAC for 33 years. It was his work that brought him to Montana in 1975, first to Great Falls and then, in 1981, to Billings. In 1989, he retired from GMAC and spent nine years working for the Billings Auto Auction.

John served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant during the Korean conflict (1950-1954). He played semi-pro baseball and basketball and later coached youth sports. He was an active and dedicated member of his community, known by many for his entertaining sense of humor and tall tales.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m., Sept. 18 at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, Billings. A reception will follow at the same location. His son-in-law the Rev. Greg Sidders will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life. Condolences can be sent to 3140 Sweet Water Drive Apt. 110, Billings, MT 59102.
