Levi Corr was the son of Methodist Minister William Corr and his wife Nancy Carleton. The Reverend Corr willed the freedom of his slaves as soon as that was legal. Levi declined ownership of any. He was a Whig. He opposed succession. He was a patriot, a Virginian, and thus defended his home. He served as Lieutenant of Company C of the 21st Virginia Militia. When officers were elected, as a Gentleman, he voted for his opponent. His opponent voted for himself and won the Captaincy for that one vote. His troop was responsible for keeping gunboats from ascending the York. He is said to have accepted the results of the War without complaint, exercising distinguished self-control. He did not condone carpetbaggers. After the War he was left but with land, character, and energy. Devoted to farming, skilled as a wright, and bound for success, he educated a large family and became a grand old man.
