Born in Norfolk County, Virginia. Graduated from the University of Virginia in 1854. Enlisted in April 1861 and detailed to the engineering department in 1862. Acting Orderly Officer to R. E. Colson in April 1862. Colson wrote that "though a private, he has served on my staff eight months and his services are indispensable. He possesses more military knowledge than nine-tenths of the officers now in the service". Wounded in the leg at Seven Pines, Virginia on May 31, 1862. 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant on August 16, 1962. Particularly distinguished for his performance at Beverly Ford, Virginia in April 1863. Captain and Assistant Adjutant General (AAG) to Rooney Lee on November 2, 1863. Served in the same capacity under Chambliss. Severely wounded at Petersburg, Virginia on June 16, 1864. Captain and AAG to Beale in 1865. Paroled at Richmond, Virginia on April 27, 1865.

His son Joseph Van Holt Nash, Jr. was Brigadier General of the Georgia National Guard.
