John did not have a middle name. Family story handed down over the years was that the older boys in the family were to have their Sunday Meeting Shirt washed and pressed ready for Sunday meeting. As is normal for boys, one of them would neglect their duty and would take John's shirt, leaving him without. He finally came up with the perfect solution to his problem, after getting his shirt ready for Sunday meeting, he picked up a piece of coal and placed a large "X" on the back of his shirt. He no longer had a missing shirt for Sunday. People laughed over this action, and he was jokingly called "X" from then on.
