Marcus Alexander Barnes, age 57, passed away on Monday morning December 14, 2020 at his home in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was born in Camden, Arkansas on September 3, 1963, to Henry Alexander Barnes Jr. and Gloria Lee Moore-Barnes.

Marcus was married to the love of his life, Leslie Paschal Barnes. This tender love began in their young teenage years and flourished through the guidance of God, the joy of family, and the church.

Marcus was preceded in death by both of his parents; his maternal grandparents, Rev. Samuel Moore and Ethel Emerson; his paternal grandparents, Henry A. Barnes, Sr. and Nora Hildreth Barnes; his cousin Gregory Scott; his aunt, Imo Gene Scott, and his uncle, Samuel Moore.

Marcus Barnes joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church at a young age under the leadership of Rev. Dr. W.L. Strickland, where he served as a Junior Deacon and Sunday school member. He was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. In Hot Springs, he met his wife, Leslie Paschal Barnes, at Roanoke Baptist Church where he later became a member and served under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Leon R. Massey. While at Roanoke, he was a member of the Board of Trustees and was an integral part of the church’s building expansion led by Mr. Frank Littleton. Upon moving to Memphis, Tennessee in Fall 1988, Marcus and his family joined Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church and later became members at Philippians V Multi-Ministry Center, under the leadership of Pastor Shirley Prince.

Marcus was a skilled carpenter. His love of carpentry was inspired by his father who was a master carpenter. Throughout his youth and adult years, they often worked together. Marcus absorbed his father’s wisdom and knowledge as a way to honor his sense of mastery. At a young age, Marcus committed to carrying on his father’s legacy and passion for the art of carpentry. After receiving a scholarship to attend Garland County Community College and Quapaw Vocational Technical School, he moved from Camden to Hot Springs, Arkansas to study drafting and building trades. Upon graduating, he entered the field and began to design and build projects that inspired his clients, his family members, his local community, and those across the country. Marcus was an artisan and a uniquely forward-thinking craftsman whose works continue to have a lasting impact among those in the trade, his friends, his family, and his loved ones.

Marcus enjoyed spending time and sharing meals with family and loved ones. He was an avid and exceptionally skilled player of chess and dominos. Marcus also enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family, especially his brother, Chester. He found great joy in creating space for entertainment, fellowship, and laughter.

Marcus was a gentle, sweet man of few words who never missed a moment to make someone smile. Now made whole, his jovial spirit lives forever among us through love, jest, and fellowship. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Leslie Paschal Barnes of Hot Springs, AR; his children Julian Alexander Barnes and Kristen Andrea Barnes of Manhattan, NY; his brother, Chester Barnes (Lana) of Dallas, TX; his sisters, Debra White of Little Rock, AR, Diane Fort (James) of Texarkana, TX, Tina Marie Barnes of Dallas, TX; his nieces and nephews, Kelleen White, Bridgette Pierre (Tyrone), Pamela White, Chassity Barnes-Hemmitt, Antonio Barnes, Chloe Barnes; his great-nieces and nephews, Miranda Arnold, Cody Arnold, Semaj Pierre, Seniya Pierre, Caleb Jackson, Caine Jackson; his great-great niece, Brooklyn Arnold, and a host of family and friends.

The family will host a private service for friends and close loved ones.
