She played the violin as a young girl. She graduated from Sacred Heart HS, Pocahontas. In 1938 Graduated from American Institute of Business, Des Moines. 1939 worked Sultouler Motor Co Des Moines.
She met Charles Byrd in Des Moines and married him at Sacred Heart, Poca where she was the first bride to be escorted down the aisle by her father in this church. They built & operated Byrd Motel in Pocahontas. Then they bgt. & operated Hemker Hardware, Poca till 1965. Kathryn was a bridge player and a skilled knitter and seamstress. She was a fabulous cook like her mother. After Charles' death she to Storm Lake, IA and she worked at a fabric store and began quilting for others.
