He was the former husband of Mary R. (Adams) Benway of Bellingham.
Born in Somerville, he was the son of the late Frederick and Edna (McCloskey) Benway. Formerly of Brockton and Selma, N.C., he was a Bellingham resident since 1973.
Mr. Benway worked for the New England Telephone Co. out of the Marlborough office as the staff manager-human resources information technology support for more than 30 years, until retiring in 1994. He then worked as technology support for Apple Computers in Franklin schools, until retiring in 2003.
He was a member of the Pioneer Telephone Workers. He was well known for his sense of humor.
Mr. Benway was an Air Force veteran, serving for 10 years, after the Korean War and during the Vietnam War.
He leaves his daughter, Jennifer L. Benway of Holliston; two grandchildren, Nathaniel Benway and Dillon Keough; and four sisters, Edna O'Brien of Braintree, Arlene Feeley of Nashua, N.H., Joan Bretta of Stoneham and Barbara Barry of Hull.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m., from Cartier's Funeral Home, 151 South Main St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Brendan's Church, Hartford Avenue.
Burial will be in the Veterans Administration's Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:45 p.m.
Calling hours are today, Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
