Enlisted in the US Navy December 18, 1941. His father (Adam Rankin, Sr.) was also a professional baseball player from 1914 to 1918 and later managed the Harrisburg (PA) Senators. His great-grandfather (Adam Rankin) was a Confederate general. He organized the 10th Kentucky Partisan Rangers.
