US Congresswoman. Her family moved to Virginia when she was nine years old. Davis attended Virginia's Hampton Roads Business College and became an executive secretary at a real estate firm before becoming a stay at home mother. In 1984 Davis became a real estate broker. She later founded Jo Ann Davis Realty and Davis Management Company, a property management business. Davis served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001. In 2000 she was the successful Republican nominee for the US House of Representatives from Virginia's first district. She was reelected three times and served from January, 2001 until her death. Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and underwent a partial mastectomy, but had a recurrence in early 2007. She was receiving treatment at Duke University Hospital until shortly before her death. Davis was one of a small number of Pentecostal Christians serving in the US House. She served on the Armed Services, International relations and Intelligence Committees, and at the time of her death Davis was the ranking minority member of the Intelligence Committee's Subcommittee on Intelligence Policy.
