Brenda Elaine Whitaker, 73, of Effingham, Illinois, went home to her Heavenly Father peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday afternoon, December 16, 2020 at her home.

Private family funeral services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Effingham.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family or The Michael J. Fox Foundation and may be received at Johnson Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here.

Brenda was born in Effingham, Illinois, on January 29, 1947, the daughter of Harold and Alena (Goen) Hewkin. She graduated from Effingham High School in 1965 and furthered her education at Sparks College in Shelbyville, Illinois. She served as a stenographer at the Great Lakes Naval Base.

On November 26, 1966, Brenda married Eugene Robert “Bob” Whitaker at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham. In 1996 their vows were renewed by the Reverend Lawrence Beebe.

Brenda was most known for her employment at Dipper Dan which was later renamed the Carousel, located in the center of the Village Square Mall, Effingham. She enjoyed many years working side by side with her dear friends, Lydia Slifer Funneman and Cheri Dust Kistler. And finally, up until her retirement in 2011, Brenda served as the dietitian for Raney Street Day Care and Preschool, Inc. “Grandma Brenda”, as the children called her, thoroughly loved going to work each and every day. She touched the lives of so many that came through the doors, staff, parents, and children alike.

Brenda is survived by her lifelong husband, Bob Whitaker, her two daughters, Tamara Sue “Tammy” (Justin) Traub of Mason and Melissa Kae Ruffner of Effingham; and 3 grandsons, Stetsen Lane Traub, Clayten Bryse Traub, and Kyle Mason Ruffner.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Wallace, Donald, and David Hewkin.

Until the time Brenda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease she spent as much time with her family as she could. She loved flowers, landscaping, and attending concerts for Neal McCoy and John Berry.
