Edward was the youngest of nine children of Henry and Mary (Freschner) Burrill of Welton, England. His parents died when he was very young, in 1839 and 1828, respectively. In 1851 he sailed for America, landing at New Orleans. He then sailed upriver to Cincinnatti, where he lived for a short time. He made his way to Illinois in 1852, and spent most of the rest of his life there.

He first married Mary A.E. Delaney, daughter of William and Catherine Delaney. She lived about a year after the marriage, and had one child. That child died before 1885.

Edward married Elizabeth Neighbors, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Gordon Gill) Neighbors, on 15 May 1856 in Morgan County, IL. They were the parents of several children, including: Sarah A., Thomas, Rebecca, Mary J., an unnamed infant girl, Susan, George, Francis, Harriet J., and Noria E. Burrill. Of these children, Sarah, Mary, Francis, Harriet, and the unnamed baby died young and are all buried in this cemetery with him. His daughter Rebecca and her husband Greenup Spencer are also buried here.

After her husband's death, Elizabeth lived out her life in the home of their daughter Susan and her husband, Louis Gilmore. There is no tombstone here for her, but her Illinois Death Certificate says she was buried in this cemetery.
