Son of Homer and Louise Burton. He was a forensic pathologist and former medical examiner who helped to solve thousands of homicide cases from seven metro Atlanta counties since 1972, including some of the region's most high-profile murders. He served as chief medical examiner in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Paulding counties and as associate medical examiner in Fulton. One of his greatest contributions was in the recognition and diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome, work that led to laws in Georgia and other states that require autopsies whenever there is no obvious cause of death for a child. He also worked on the infamous Atlanta child murders case, investigating the killings of Black boys and young men from 1979 to 1981. He was preceded in death by his son, Sean Lawson Burton; sisters, Cathy Burton and Helena Stiles. He is survived by his wife, Judy P Burton; and sister, Nancy Maloney. He died at a federal prison while serving a prison term for a criminal scheme.
