She left a dream job in Dallas with 6 specialized music teachers in her school and went to 3,000 children, K-3rd Grade per week walking into her music room. After a year with the Air Force, she was then transferred to Stuttgart, Germany with the Army.

Dixie then moved to Amarillo in 1970 where she worked in music education and taught piano lessons until 1975. She married Mack Gordon in 1973 until his passing in 2016. Dixie volunteered her time in many areas in the community; served as past president of Amarillo Junior League, Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Little Theatre, Advisory Committee with Northwest Texas Hospital and MADD.
