"JOE MAYFIELD, TIMES-CALL AD MANAGER, DIES AFTER SURGERY"

"Joseph Curtis Mayfield, Longmont Times-Call local advertising manager, died at 8 p.m. Tuesday at General Rose Hospital, Denver, after a four-week serious illness. He was 50.

"In failing health for some time Mr. Mayfield had been treated earlier this month at Longmont Hospital, then was able to return his home at 909 Third Avenue, for a few days. He visited Longmont Hospital again August 30, when arrangements were made for his entry into General Rose Hospital August 31.

"He had undergone two operations Monday night, to correct a serious bladder condition, and failed to rally Tuesday.

"He joined the staff of The Times-Call in August, 1944, and continued as local advertising manager up to the time of his death.

"A Longmont native, he was born here March 25, 1907. he lived most of his life in this city, attending grade and high schools here. He married Miss Leona Chance of Loveland April 9, 1935, in Denver.

"Mr. Mayfield was employed form 1935 to 1944 as feed salesman and bookkeeper for Longmont Flour Mills, Denver Elevators. He resigned that position to assume the advertising duties on the Times-Call.

"An active member of Longmont Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No. 1055, from the time of his initiation February 17, 1943, he served the organization as exalted ruler from April 1, 1948, to March 31, 1949. He was a life member of the Elks, and a member and past president of the Exalted Rulers Club.

"He maintained and active interest in the Elks project at Laradon Hall, Denver, a home for retarded children, and was a willing member of groups presenting ward parties at Fitzsimons Hospital, Denver, for hospitalized servicemen. Mr. Mayfield gained a wide reputation as an amateur magician, master of ceremonies and entertainer.

"Surviving are his wife, Leona, of 909 Third Avenue, Longmont; two brothers, Rev. Lowell Mayfield of the Baptist Church, Lafayette, and Jean Mayfield of Ogden, Utah; one sister, Miss Lue Mayfield, Salt Lake City, Utah; two nephews and three nieces.

"A sister, Mrs. Grace Whitesel, died three years ago in Denver.

"His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mayfield, were Longmont area pioneers."

"Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from Howe Mortuary. Rev. Ervin Basler officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, with members of the Elks lodge in charge of committal services."
