Shirley was born on December 2, 1939, the third daughter of Glenn and Milady Rice. She attended Lebanon schools and graduated from Lebanon Union High School in 1957.

She married her high school sweetheart, Norman "Pete" Spillman in 1958. They had two daughters, Teresa Kaye and Traci Rae. She was also the legal guardian of and raised her beloved niece Debra Sue.

She was widowed in 1968 and was remarried to Carl Ward in 1969. From this marriage she became the stepmother of 4 more children; Craig, Linda, Randy and Richard Ward.

Shirley worked as a clerk and manager of Sprouse-Reitz. Her most current job was in the money center at Wal-Mart in Lebanon.

Shirley was an avid stargazer and home astronomer. She loved to spend hours gazing at the stars with her own telescope and made many trips to central Oregon to Pine Mountain Observatory. While her children were growing up she loved to go camping and boating. She also enjoyed golf and gardening. Shirley was a lifelong student and avid reader. Shirley loved the beach and made frequent trips throughout her life to the Oregon Coast with her family. Her most recent love was her dog and best friend, Dusty.

In recent years Shirley also took some computer classes at the local community college and was quite the web surfer. Her latest project was teaching herself to speak Spanish. Always an animal lover, her current pet companions includes dogs, goats, squirrels, rabbits, quail and wild turkeys.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Carl Ward of Lebanon; her children Teresa Spillman of Gresham, OR, Traci Dow of Ashland, OR, Randy Ward of Lebanon, OR, Craig Ward of Independence, MO, Linda Tindall of Buckner, MO, Richard Ward of Kansas City, MO, and her sister, Donna Weaver, of Bullhead City, AZ Shirley has 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

In Shirley's own words she said:

"Think of me some starry night and know that my soul is at peace; here, where
we seek our futures in the shining lights of our past".
