According to the 1906 Historical Atlas of wellington County, William Thring was educated at Eton and Oxford and became a barrister.
He came to Canada with considerable means in 1836, and ourchased 100 acres, lots 9 -12 Con 1D Guelph Township, where he lived until his death in 1861. He married Rachel Webster in 1841 and she died in 1902 aged, 85 yrs.
The late Wm A. Thring was what might be termed a book farmer. His life from childhood had been devoted to the acquirement of education, and he was illy fitted for bush life in a new country, but he adapted himself to the conditions, and under the circumstances, made a creditable showing. it is the opinion of the older settlers, who were well acquainted with him, that had he practiced his profession in Guelph, instead of engaging in Agriculture, he would undoubtedly achieved success.
