He spent 67 summers going to Big Long Lake in Wolcottville, Indiana and was a true “laker.” He was a graduate of North Side High School and earned his bachelors degree from Indiana University. John was a devoted IU football and basketball fan. John joined the US Army immediately following his college graduation and served as a S/Sgt in Vietnam. He received a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in combat, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, as well as two Purple Hearts. After returning to Fort Wayne, John began his accounting career with Fruehauf Trailer and retired as a Financial Analyst with General Dynamics.
John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sylvia Gross; daughters, Sara Gross of Baltimore, MD, Amy (Nick) Stephenson; grandsons, Preston and Spencer Stephenson who brought him great joy; brothers, R. Steven (Donna) Gross of Big Long Lake, Frank (Paula) Gross of Bradenton, FL, and Greg (Micheale) of Fort Wayne.
Service is 2 pm, Saturday, January 2, 2021 at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton Street, with calling from 12 pm until the service.
Interment: Marion National Cemetery
