The daughter of David Oakes and the former Abigail H. Baldwin, 24-year-old Mrs. Van Liew, nee Sarah E. Oakes, was born into a prominent Bloomfield family whose fortune was made in the textile industry. Her marriage to Cornelius S. Van Liew ended with her death on New Year's Day 1858. The grave adjoining hers in the Oakes Plot is that of her younger brother, George Oakes, who died three years later at age 26 on Christmas Eve 1861. The two siblings' marble monuments, the most ornate in the large family plot, epitomize the Victorian mourning tradition. The inscription on Sarah's reads: "Her sun went down while it was yet day, but to the upright there appears light in the darkness."
