Age 78, of Scott Twp., formerly of Upper St. Clair, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014. Joy grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1957. She was a first grade teacher for a number of years, and later worked as a sales associate at the Horne's/Lazarus/ Macy's store in South Hills Village. Joy was active in the local community. She participated in a variety of golf and bowling leagues over the years and played in several bridge clubs. She was a longtime member and past president of the USC Graduates club, a former member of Harmony Singers, and did volunteer work for a number of community groups. She also enjoyed reading, but her favorite activity was spending time with her friends, her family, and her dog, Jack. Joy was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Bob West. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dan Crossland of Hockessin, Delaware; two grandsons, David and Jeffrey Crossland, also of Hockessin; sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Bob Heffner of Charlotte, NC; and nephew, Jerry Qualls and his wife, Ruth Johnstone, of Reno, NV. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. A Memorial Service to celebrate Joy's life will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, with visitation beginning at 3 p.m., at the Peelor Chapel in Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102, with the Rev. Cindy Schneider officiating, followed by a light supper at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org), the Washington Area Humane Society (www.washingtonpashelter.org), or to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org).
