A Loving Wife, Mother, Daughter and Friend
Mrs. Desdemona Doris Shepperson Fuller of Petersburg, VA peacefully entered into eternal rest on December 10, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Midlothian, VA at the age of 87. Doris was born on September 20, 1933 in Hopewell, VA to Weaver Augustus Shepperson, Sr. and Ruth Jones Shepperson.
She grew up in Hopewell where she joined Friendship Baptist Church, taught Sunday School, and served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. Doris attended primary school in Hopewell and Peabody High School in Petersburg, VA. After graduating from Peabody, she enrolled in Virginia State College (University) where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1953. She would later receive a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Virginia State in 1971.
At the age of 19, Doris took her first job as a teacher in Pittsylvania County at Southside High School. After three years, Doris joined Prince George schools where she taught mathematics at J.E.J. Moore and N.B. Clements schools for another 33 years. She found herself in the middle of social change as Prince George schools desegregated in 1969, often speaking about finally having the opportunity to equally help all students maximize their potential to achieve their best. After retiring from Prince George schools in 1989, she took a position as an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at Virginia State University. Over her 10 plus years at Virginia State, she received numerous awards and accolades including induction into the National Scientific Honor Society (Beta Kappa Chi). Doris’ former students often showered her with thanks and praise for the impact that she had on their lives.
As a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church, she served as Chairperson of the Willing Workers, a member of the Trustee Board, and a missionary. She was also active in the Foster Grandparents program, Senior Circle, and lifelong student tutoring. Doris was an avid gardener who loved flowers, a voracious reader who enjoyed all genres of books, and a lover of fashion who truly liked to dress up. Doris will always be remembered for her tireless work ethic, caring heart, and devotion to bettering everyone around her. She was unconditionally willing to help anyone in need and always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded by her husband, Arthur Lee Fuller. and her brothers, Willie McDonald Shepperson and Weaver Augustus Shepperson, Jr. Doris is survived by her son, Arthur Shepperson Fuller of Ashburn, VA; granddaughter, Gabriella Nicole Fuller of Charlottesville, VA; grandson, Antonio Todd Fuller of Ashburn, VA; daughter-in-law, Tina Juliana Fuller of Ashburn, VA; sister, Jacqueline Ruth Shepperson of Hopewell, VA; sister-in-law, Shirley Cobbs Shepperson of Petersburg, VA; nephew, Steven Davis Shepperson of South Chesterfield, VA; nephew, Dr. Stanley McDonald Shepperson of Washington, DC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, 750 Page Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Jameson K. McLaughlin, eulogist.
