A prominent Corona pastor for almost 50 years, Dr David E Howard peacefully passed to his heavenly resting place on November 25, 2020. David was born in San Bernardino on August 28, 1933, served his country with the Navy on the USS Iowa during the Korean War until 1954, then met the love of his life and married Gayleen Slaton on October 16, 1955.
He and Gayleen came to Corona in 1955 living in a small home in the Canyon across from Feathery Park, they purchased the family home in a small community of Corona known as Coronita in 1958. Here they lived throughout their marriage while successfully raising their 4 children. David owned and operated Dave’s Westernaire barbershop on 6th Street for many years and was active with other community leaders in Corona. Spending years as a barber before working years in the food retail business as managers with Alpha Beta and Michael’s Market. In 1972 David decided to follow God’s direction to open a church in his neighborhood of Coronita.
With the decision to start a church, David went forward and completed his high school education, graduated in 1976 with his Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University, and later completed his master’s and Doctorate Degree of Religious education.
The Church’s first service was in the family home on July 3, 1973 with just a small handful of people.
The church occupied several other locations before building a church at 1901 West Ontario with the first service being held on September 1, 1977. Through the years the Church name was changed to Corona Christian Center, had built more than 24,000 sqft of educational and worship centers on 8 acres of land, and met the needs of nearly a million people through the almost 50 years of Pastor Howard’s service to God and the community of Corona. Today, the ministry moves on under the name Corona Christian World Ministries and continues to serve needs in Corona and around the world.
During the 65 years of marriage to Gayleen, they successfully raised 4 children: David, Timothy, Michele, and Robert “Bobby” Howard. The David E Howard family legacy continues through their offspring with 11 grandkids and 9 great grand kids all living throughout the country.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, there will be a private service and burial on December 15th, 2020. Flowers can be sent to Thomas Miller Mortuary 1118 E. 6th Street in Corona, or to continue Dr David E Howard’s work in the community, we would prefer donations be made to Corona Christian World Ministries at www.coronachristianctr.com/giving
