Rife Sibley Hughey, aged 70, prominent Atkins businessman for 45 years, died Tuesday, February 21 at his home here.

Mr. Hughey was owner and operator of the City Drug Store. He was a valued citizen of the community, being active in church, civic and school affairs. He had been a member of the Atkins school board for more than 25 years, serving as secretary much of that time. He had been a member of the Official Board of the Methodist church for 30 years. He also served as church treasurer for many years.

He was born in Atkins September 19, 1885, a son of the late Isaac Jerome and Mattie Sibley Hughey, (later Burris). His character of life and service to his community were attested to by the throngs of friends who gathered at the Atkins Methodist church Thursday morning to pay final earthly respects.

Rev. Kenneth Shamblin of Little Rock paid beautiful tribute to the life of Mr. Hughey. Local pastor, John W. Glover assisted in the service. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Atkins school board and the school faculty, the Wesley Bible Class, the Methodist Board of Stewards; Dr. L. Gardner, N.H. Bell, and Forrest Lemley, Russellville; Dr. Thomas Hickey, Morrilton; Dr. William Cooper Jr., R.J. Godbey, W.W. Mitchell and B.M. Whaley, Little Rock, E.B. Haney, Dr. W.C. Cale, Dr. E.P. Griffin and Carl Jones of Atkins. Active pallbearers were Lewis McCollum, Jack Lemley, Pat Lemley, Clarence Churchill, Dewey Martin and Lewis Berkemeyer.

Burial was in the City cemetery directed by Lemley Funeral Service.

Mr. Hughey was preceeded in death by his parents, a son, William Hughey, and a sister, Ava Jacinthia Hughey McCollum. Survivors include his wife Margaret Yarnell Hughey, a son, Rife Sibley Hughey Jr., Knoxville, Tennessee; two daughters, Mrs. Julia M. Gray of Fayetteville and Mrs. Nancy A. Young, Atkins, and a brother, Isaac Jerome Hughey of Atkins.
