Gene Reid, age 85, went to meet his LORD on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 after a sudden illness. The family will lay Gene’s earthly body to rest in a private ceremony on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Idalou.

Note: Birth Certificate shows that he was born in the city of Lubbock.

He was born in the community of Becton on June 8, 1935 to James and Alpha (Moody) Reid. Gene farmed in the Becton area and lived there all but the last 17 years. He attended early elementary school in Becton, moving to and graduating in 1953 from Idalou schools after the closure of the Becton school. He received a B.S. in agronomy from Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University) in 1958. On September 13, 1956 Gene married Claire Louise Holliday. Together, they raised four children. As widowed spouses, Gene and Maxine Wall were blessed to find new love and they began their married life together on June 28, 2003.

Gene loved family, farming, bird hunting, his community and his church. As a third generation Reid farmer, he passed his love of the land and his profession on to both a son and a grandson, helping to ensure the legacy of Reid farms endures. All who knew Gene understood the passion that he held for the hunt; not just in terms of birds bagged, but in all aspects of the process from the scouting of the land, to the organization of the group, to the fellowship enjoyed while on the hunt. As a lifelong member of the Becton and Idalou communities, Gene valued participation in civic endeavors. He served as an Idalou ISD board member in the mid 1970s and was a member of a local Lion’s Club. An avid sports spectator, Gene especially loved to attend the sporting events of his children, grandchildren and Idalou athletes. The Idalou United Methodist Church was a shaping force in Gene’s adult years and he answered the call to serve in many roles as a member. The Methodist Men group and the annual men’s (sons and daughters) retreats were especially important in his life.

Gene Reid is survived by his wife, Maxine and her daughters Sherry Denson of Idalou and Barbara (Jim) Irwin of Estacado; children Renee (Clay) Callaway of Palmer, Ronald (Shelly) Reid of Becton, Randal(Kyla) Reid of Idalou and Jennifer Reid of Becton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. He is predeceased by his wife Claire Holliday Reid, and grandchildren Anabel Reid and Jaxon Reid.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to suggest that donations be made to the Idalou United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 885 Idalou 79329) or a charity of choice.
