Roy Jean Lee was born in Austin, Texas on October 29, 1931 to parents Roy Albert and Johnnie Mae Bacon. Roy Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, James L. Lee, and her adored son, Bertram M. Lewis.
Roy Jean attended the Austin Independent Schools: Blackshear Elementary, Kealing Jr. High, and L.C. Anderson High School. She graduated in 1952 from Huston-Tillotson University; additionally, Roy Jean studied at University of Texas, Prairie View A&M, and Texas State University (formerly known as Southwest Texas State).
After graduating from Huston-Tillotson, Roy Jean pursued a career as an educator. She began her teaching career as a teacher at Ebenezer Baptist Church Nursery School. Because of segregation, there were few positions for black teachers in the Austin ISD. But that challenge did not stop Roy Jean from pursuing her career. With great determination, she was able to get teaching positions in Belton, Florence, and Killeen. In fact, she served as superintendent, principal, and teacher for the only black one-room "schoolhouse" in the Florence ISD. Eventually with the support and encouragement from several black principals and teachers, Roy Jean was able to get a position with Austin ISD where she taught until her retirement in 2001.
Roy Jean was a very loving person and full of life. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Roy Jean was passionate about her responsibilities as teacher and cared strongly not only for the education of her students but their personal growth as well.
