On May 8th 1862 he was wounded in the arm at the battle of McDowell He would probably have been killed instantly except for his diary and bible which were in his coat pocket. A ball went through his diary and stopped in the middle of his Bible. He was in Co.C,39th Va.Cav.Batallion
which was connected to General Lee's Headquarters as scouts, guides or couriers.
