Dr. Frank Whalen, Jr., 56, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996 at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital. Born October 27, 1939 in Bourbon County, he was the son of Gertrude Kearns McLean and the late Frank Whalen. He was a physician and a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He entered private practice in Harrodsburg in 1968 with Keightley & Moore Family Practice. He was an active fund-raiser for the Mercer Co. Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Harrodsburg Athletic Boosters and team physician for Harrodsburg and Mercer County High Schools. He provided free physicals for Mercer County Little League (Football and Baseball) and the Boy Scouts of Mercer Co. He was past chairman of the Mercer County Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Mercer Board of Health, Bluegrass District Board of Health and the Harrodsburg Athletic Booster Club. He served as Staff Chairman at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital for two terms, was past director and president of Harrodsburg Jaycees and was awarded "Outstanding Young Man" by the Jaycees. He served as Mercer County Coroner for 12 years, donating all compensation to the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Library Board. Upon Endorsement of 2500 local residents the new Harrodsburg-Mercer County Board of Health Building was dedicated in his honor. Survivors include: his wife, Verna Devine Whalen, Harrodsburg; his mother, Gertrude McLean, Paris; step father, Avery McLean, Paris; one son, Michael Whalen, Harrodsburg; three daughters, Laura Whalen-Bourdon, Jennifer Whalen Schuster and Leah Whalen, all of Harrodsburg; one step son, Michael Votaw, Harrodsburg, one step daughter, Kristen Votaw, Harrodsburg; one sister, Mrs. Don (Nellie) Ross, Dayton, OH; two grandchildren. Services for Dr. Whalen were held Friday, May 3, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Hilary Claypool officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
