Perry Franklin
1926-2014

Perry Clell Franklin, 88, of St. Joseph, formerly of Savannah, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at his home at Vintage Gardens.

Perry was born June 20, 1926, at the farm home of George and Viola (Chance) Franklin of Sevierville, Tenn., the 10th of 12 children and the last one to survive. His twin sister, Mary Dell, passed away at 19 months. He attended rural Middle Creek School, then Sevier County High School, joining the Navy at age 17. He served 16 and a half months in the South Pacific during World War II, including landing Marines on Okinawa, and was there when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Upon returning home, he re-entered SCHS and acquired his GED. He worked as a warehouseman for Tennessee Valley Authority, then moved to Savannah in 1949 to be there when his mother would return from time to time for treatments at the Dr. Nichols Cancer Sanatorium. He obtained a job at Crane Lumber, which was to be his occupation for his working years.

On January 11, 1953, he was married to Doris Hurst by Rev. Thomas D. Hall; they enjoyed 60 plus years together.

In 1955, they moved to Washington state for two years and returned to Missouri until they became co-owners of Kurz-Franklin Lumber at Sabetha, Kan. for 12 years. He eventually returned to Crane Lumber as manager for the remainder of his working years, having enjoyed 29 years with Cranes.

He was active in the church and service organizations in the communities, where he resided, having been a lifelong Methodist and a 37 year member of Savannah Lions Club, member and past Master of Savannah Masonic Lodge # 71 and held lifetime memberships in the American Legion and VFW.

In 2009, Perry and his wife, Doris, moved to Vintage Gardens Assisted Living in St. Joseph.

After his retirement, he and Doris enjoyed several automobile trips before they started bus tours with Neihart out of Braddyville, Iowa. It was like one big happy family seeing new sights together. Through the years, Perry and Doris were blessed with great friends and neighbors. God surely blessed them.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Savannah United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to the Savannah United Methodist Church or Asera Care Hospice.
