Richard Scarborough, age 83, died peacefully after a brief illness on June 21st in the amazing care of Hospice of the Carolina Foothills (and before that Brookdale Forest City and Eastwood Village).
He was born December 8, 1936 in Jamaica to Arthur Scarborough and Hazel May Schleifer. His family immigrated to Seattle in 1948 where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1954. He spent the next four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the tanker U.S.S. Platte. Prior to retirement in 1999, he spent 28 years as a data processor at the University of Washington. A few of his favorite things included the company of dear neighbors on his street in Seattle and RV outings to be with dear friends on Whidbey Island or the Hood Canal.
He is fondly remembered by his legacy: two daughters - Dana (Alan) and Margaret (Scott); four grandchildren – Zach (Kate), Nate, Carson and Torin; and two great-granddaughters – Maeve and Maggie… We remember his faithful presence at family milestones, including swim meets, soccer games, hockey, football, rugby, school plays, baptisms, graduations, and weddings. We all share happy early memories at the swimming pool with Dad/Grandpa, learning to enjoy and be safe in and around water, and usually followed by ice cream!
A Committal service will be held at 10 o'clock, Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina. His ashes will be placed in the Veterans Columbarium.
