Helen was born on October 1, 1927, a daughter of Thomas H. and Elizabeth Ryder Dunn, and was a graduate of Waterville Central School. Her childhood was spent on the family farm in Sangerfield, NY where, whenever she had the chance, she preferred driving the tractor rather than bailing the hay. Helen had worked at the Waterville Knitting Mill following her high school graduation. Her career in the food industry was with the Grand Union store on Genesee Street in Utica where she started as a cashier and worked up to be the Manager of the Non-Foods department. Helen enjoyed her customers and coworkers and retired after 30 years of service. Helen traveled extensively visiting Europe, Japan and her favorite “Islands”, Hawaii. She enjoyed bowling, poetry and music. She LOVED all things chocolate (especially dark) and baseball games! She also loved hearing the adventures of her family and relatives.
Surviving are her sister, Patricia D. Youngs, formerly of Waterville, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Berenice D. Osborne and Mary D. Brennan; brothers, Raymond and George Dunn; brothers-in-law, Philip J. Osborne, Vincent Brennan and Jack R. Youngs; sisters-in-law, Helen W. Dunn and Luella Dunn.
A private Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville with interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Waterville Area Food Pantry, Inc., 145 Stafford Ave., Waterville, NY 13480.
