Mr. Charles Jerome "C.J." Bates

October 7, 1978 - December 9, 2020

Charles Jerome Bates was born October 7, 1978 in Oceanside, California to Charles and Shirley Smith Bates. He was the oldest son and leaves to mourn: his oldest sister, Kaneshia Lowell and younger brother, Charod RayTrel Bates. On Tuesday, December 6, 2020, he was called home to be with his grandparents. The grandson of the late Eldon and Lillie Bates and the late William and Alma Martin Smith. C. J., which he was known as in school, graduated from Watertown High School in 1996. C. J. was a Warehouse worker and a Press Operator. He was a jack of all trades, i.e. Plumbing and Mechanic. C. J. was a huge Florida Gator fan. He turned his oldest nephew into one also. He loved playing with his youngest nephew and two great nephews' goats. He would talk to them, argue with them and feed them. Since he went to his heavenly home, they have been hollering for him. C. J. would pop up at your house and first stop was the refrigerator. Boy could he clean it out for you. He got baptized in his late 30's at the Water Edge Church in Watertown, TN under Pastor T. J. Hewitt. He leaves to mourn his memory: his parents, Charles and Shirley Bates; sister, Kaneshia Bredona (Lowell); brother, Charod RayTrel Bates; four nephews, KeAnDre (Katie) KeAnTos, KeAnDric and Canaan; and two great great nephews, Kendrick and Kash; one bonus sister, Shahana Grooms-Gooch (Terry); three uncles, Timmy and Tommy Bates and William Edwin Smith; seven aunts, Mary Woods, Joyce Douglas, Linda James (Walter), Brenda Mays, Karen Winrow (Kelvin, Sr.), Aneshia Smith and a very devoted aunt, Alita Smith; very devoted cousin, Datonia McClemons (Scotty) .... a day didn't go by without them talking. To C. J., all his cousins were special when they get together it was special. On the Bates side, there was a saying, "That rain, sleet, snow could not stop them." He also leaves behind a special friend, Jacquelyn Bond and a host of cousins, great aunts and uncles and friends.
