Connie Garrett
May 14, 1943 - December 9, 2020
O'Fallon, Illinois - Margaret Cornelia Garrett "Connie," age 77, of O'Fallon, born May 14, 1943 in Belleville, Ill., was granted eternal rest on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at her home in O'Fallon, Ill.
Connie grew up O'Fallon and attended Ruma High School and college, preparing her for her service in the convent. Connie's six years as a nun blessed her with strong roots and a faith in God that continued to guide her throughout her life. She valued her time at the convent before realizing that God had other plans for her life.
Upon leaving the convent, Connie became a nursery school director in Belleville. She enjoyed singing and participating in the Broadway Musical Variety Choral Group, which offered performances to raise money for various Catholic charities. It was here where she not only formed many lifelong friendships, but met her future husband, Paul. Soon after they married on August 6, 1966 at St. Clare Parish, Paul was drafted into the army and was sent to Germany. It was during this time that Connie was a social worker in East St. Louis until she flew to Germany to be with the love of her life, Paul. Upon returning to O'Fallon from Germany, their first daughter, Angi, was born, and Connie began substitute teaching at St. Albert the Great and St. Clare Catholic School. Soon after, their 2nd daughter, Tanya was born. Connie then became a stay-at-home mom and soon welcomed her third baby, Paul James.
When Connie re-entered the workforce, she became the first uniformed female mail carrier in O'Fallon and worked at the O'Fallon post office for 5 years. She then worked at the Lebanon post office as clerk and Assistant Postmaster. Continuing a life of service, Connie dedicated many years of volunteering with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. She also taught by example as a Girl Scout leader, and was active at St. Clare Parish, serving on the hospitality committee, Parish Council, and the building committee.
Connie loved her fun times with her Bunco and Canasta friends – times which Connie found so enriching and life-giving. Throughout her life, Connie was blessed with a beautiful family, dedicated friends, and she found deep meaning in serving others. She has appreciated the kindness of others. Connie believed in the power of prayer and is grateful to her partners in the St. Vincent de Paul group, and the Benedictine Brother Friars. St.Clare Parish has been a source of strength and blessing to her over the years. Connie's gift of friendship, hospitality, her sense of humor, and her commitment to serving others will live on.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Mary Elliott; her brothers James, Eugene, and Robert Elliott; and her sister Theresa Keeney.
Surviving are her husband Elmer "Paul" Garrett of O'Fallon; her children of whom she was very proud, Angi (Phillip) Klohr and their children Jordan and Harrison; Tanya (Jack) Prawica and their children Chloe, Hanna, Michael, and Lily; and Paul James (Joni) Garrett and their children Isabel, Gavin, and Reagan; her brother John (Betty) Elliott; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul . The guest book is available at www.wfh-ofallon.com.
