Son of Thomas Hammond and Harriet Trow. He was born in South Boston, MA. He attended Boston High School, Boston Public Latin School, Phillips Academy in Andover, University of Vermont and Union Theological Seminary. Hammond was a Civil War correspondent for the New York Tribune. He was an early inventor of the typewriter and President of the Hammond Typewriter Company. He died near St. Augustine, Florida while on his yacht. He was married to Jeannette Maxwell, but they were estranged at the time of his death.
