Jim C. Moore
August 23, 1945 - December 04, 2020
U.S. Veteran

Jim C. Moore, 75 years old, of Vicksburg, Mississippi, went to serve his Heavenly Father on December 4th, 2020. A visitation will be held on December 13th from 3:00 to 4:00 at Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church in Vicksburg, MS and burial at Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, MS, at 1:00 December 14th.

Jim, also known as Doc to many friends and associates, was born Jimmy Cariker Moore to Albert Lamar Moore and Elise Cariker Moore on August 23, 1945 in Cleveland, Mississippi. The oldest of six children, he began the earliest part of his life in Marks, Mississippi, before the family moved to Clarksdale and then to Greenwood, where Jim graduated from high school with the Class of 1963.

Following high school, Jim enrolled in Delta State College, where he majored in his freshman year in fraternity life, being a founding brother of Phi Tau, a colony and later a chapter of Phi Kappa Tau International. His junior year he met Elizabeth Blacklidge, his wife-to-be, and settled down to a major in social studies in pursuit of secondary teaching certification.

Graduating in May 1968, and marrying Betty that June, Jim and Betty took teaching jobs in Biloxi, Mississippi, where Jim taught social studies for one year prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged in 1973, Jim and Betty returned to Biloxi where Jim taught a second year before taking a position as a junior high school assistant principal. After a year, he joined the Biloxi Public Schools Central Office as one of its two drug education specialists.

While with Biloxi Schools, Jim finished his master’s degree work in school administration at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Jim left Biloxi to attend the University of Southern Mississippi full-time and completed a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in School Administration in 1978. While a graduate student, Jim served as part of a team of graduate students who assisted the Lamar County School District with a school facilities study. This led to his employment after graduation as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Lamar County, Mississippi. In 1979, he then took the position as Assistant Superintendent in Moss Point, Mississippi.

After five years in Moss Point, Jim was hired in 1984 as Superintendent for the Greenwood Public Schools. Three years in Greenwood were followed by seven years in the Jackson Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and then two-and-a-half years as Deputy Superintendent in the Vicksburg Warren School District in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Following his retirement in 1997, Jim created Training Resource Associates with JoAnn Walton to help school improvement training. In 2007, following his second retirement, he began working as an Election Support Specialist in Issaquena and Leflore Counties for the Diebold Corporation, which in turn led to his employment as an independent contractor with the Warren County Board of Supervisors.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth ( Betty) Moore of Vicksburg, Mississippi; his two precious children, his son Dr. David Moore (wife Brittany) of Madison, Mississippi, and his daughter Laura Moore Skelton of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Jim also leaves behind his grandchildren, Sailor and Coleson Moore of Madison, and Keagan Skelton of Vicksburg, along with his siblings Marion Ward (Ernie) of Seattle, Washington, Albert Moore of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeanie Hannah (Gary) of Vancouver, Washington, Bobby Moore (Kitty) of Albuquerque. New Mexico, and Michael Moore (Gina) of Orlando, Florida. Jim leaves behind his God Children, Jo Collier “Callie” Walton of Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Micky Finley of Lafayette, Louisiana, Dr. Ricky Finley of Plano Tx, and Dr. Ross Gruetzemacher of Auburn Alabama.

There is also his beloved church family, the brothers and sisters of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church of Vicksburg, where Jim taught Sunday School for the Grayson Adults Class for 13 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church, 350 Oak Ridge Road, Vicksburg, Mississippi 39183.
