Lewis John Harris, Sr., of Savannah, died after a short illness on December 3, 2020.
John was born in Savannah on August 29, 1942 and remained here until his death with the exception of his service in the US Air Force. Upon his return from duty, he worked for Xerox as a technician for 29 years. After retiring, he kept active by volunteering at First Presbyterian Church, The Thunderbolt Museum and Habitat for Humanity.
He was able to fix most things and shared that knowledge with many when they needed it. He would make himself available to help anyone who needed his assistance. He was also a photographer, and used that skill for many weddings, sports teams, and anyone else who would stand still long enough for him to get his camera out.
John was a loving husband to Bonnie Wells Harris for 54 years. Together they had two sons, Lewis John (Chip), Jr. and James Kirby. John’s life revolved around his family, and he was often found on the sidelines of his son’s athletic activities.
Other than his wife and sons, John is survived by three sisters Rosie Bowen, Lila Bravard, and Linda Zeigler; daughters-in law, Suzette Harris and Paula Harris, six grandchildren, Stephanie, Emily, David, James, Paige and Sarah, and a gaggle of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church (www.savannahfpc.org) on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 3 pm.
