James Kenner “Hamfat” Elkins, Jr., 76, of Mullens, passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at his residence. Hamfat was a 1962 graduate of Mullens High School, a former coal miner, and was a member of a National Championship Mine Rescue & First Aid Team. He was a member of the Mullens United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, was a member of the Mullens Methodist Men where he often led devotionals for the Men’s prayer breakfast. He was a former Governor and lifetime member of the Mullens Moose Lodge. In his leisure he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, bragging about his grandchildren, and spending time with friends at the shed. He also loved baseball, old music, trivia, and WVU sports.

Born May 3, 1944 at Itmann, he was the son of the late James Kenner Elkins, Sr. (1913-Deceased) and Vida Long-Elkins (1916-Deceased). In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his sister, Anna Ruth Elkins-Francis (Deceased).

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Patricia Elkins; his daughter, Jamie Elkins-Hanson & husband Donald Hanson of Fredericksburg, VA; his son, Darryl Elkins & wife Penny Elkins of Mullens; his grandchildren, Hannah Hanson, Olivia Hanson, Julia Hanson, Madelynn Elkins, and Michael Elkins; two brothers, Tommy Elkins & wife Phyllis of Elkins Heber Springs, Arkansas, and Bill Elkins & wife Judy Elkins of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Committal Service and entombment will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum B, Beckley with Rev. Lewis Arnold and John Morgan officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery. Those wishing to attend the services, CDC guidelines will be followed, social distancing is required, and masks are mandatory.
