For 104 years, Anna Marie Parnell Harris Roberts lived her life to the fullest. Born March 18, 1916 she lived through two world wars and two pandemics. She saw great progression in transportation and communication. Throughout it all, whatever hand she was dealt, she played it with wit and grace.
Marie gave up the American dream of a settled home for her and her only daughter, Annella Jo, to follow her husband, Levi, in his beloved work as an operator of heavy machinery for building roads. Along this journey, Marie decided to become a licensed practical nurse. While raising Jo, Marie worked in many different hospitals and doctors’ offices. In addition to her skills as a nurse, Marie was an exquisite seamstress. Her abilities with a sewing machine enabled her to look at a garment in a department store, then go home, and make it. Marie and her family travelled in the South and worked. In 1960, they welcomed Jo’s husband, Buddy Anderson, into their life. This union began Marie’s role as a grandmother to Jennifer, Dan, Kathryn, Charlotte, and Ben Anderson. In this role as a grandmother, Marie then became Granny – a name by which she has been known by many people who knew and loved her to this present moment. She was a grandmother who gave it all she had. Her presence and deposits of love have been an everlasting treasure in many peoples’ lives. She was a treasure pourer into the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. No problem in their lives was too great for her to lend a hand in tackling and no occasion for joy was left unattended. Granny was always the source of much wisdom, including songs from the 1920s and 1930s, revelations on how to hoe and pick cotton, and knowledge on how to stack green peanuts to dry. She was the source of many family recipes, including her unforgettable cornbread and the best chicken and dumplings on the planet. She gave her family lessons on how to handle an iron skillet and how to use a sewing machine. But the most invaluable lesson of them all was how to “live and let live.”
When the Anderson family moved to Pensacola, Marie and Levi uprooted themselves from Arkansas and followed their family. When Levi died in 1979, there followed years when she lived alone but she always provided love and care for her family. Marie never failed to offer space and love for her grandchildren, as well her grandchildren’s children when they came along. Later, Marie met and married Bob Roberts with whom she lived happily until his death. Marie continued her life as a grandmother and great grandmother extraordinaire. She enjoyed her activities with church groups and other volunteering organizations. When she entered her nineties, dementia set in and she went to live with Jo and Buddy for her last twelve years. West Florida Council on Aging Day Care provided socialization and care for Marie, as well as relief from primary care duties for Jo and Buddy. Her family is grateful to them. Even with dementia taking its toll on her memory, Marie’s personality and basic intelligence were there, blazing forth with force and brilliance at every encounter. She remained remarkably intact physically and was known for breaking forth in dance, song, and words of advice on life at the drop of a hat.
Marie was a committed follower of the teachings of Jesus from her early childhood when she took herself to the country church in her area of Tennessee without the shepherding of her parents who were not churchgoers. She was always open to the spiritual side of life and always wanted to know more about God. Her faith expressed itself in compassion for the people she met in her life. She had the humility to know that she was always a work in progress. She took God’s forgiveness for her and her need to forgive others seriously. Her last church affiliation was with Charity Chapel. We are indebted to Pastor Mike Collins and the congregation, especially the Day Stars Senior Group, for their show of love for Marie.
Marie was feisty, smart, loving and a hard worker. Her faith, her love of life, and her ability to accept change were her great tools of survival. Marie’s death leaves a big space in her large and diverse family circle. The circle includes her daughter, Annella Jo Anderson (Buddy); her granddaughters, Jennie Brummet (Brent), Kathryn Geyer (John, who is meeting Granny in Heaven now), Charlotte Ruiz (Jose); and her grandsons, Dan (Kristy) and Ben (Lillia). Ever enlarging the circle are her great grandchildren, Ailish Geyer, who has gone to Heaven and is with Granny, Tyler Brummet (Heidi), Chanson Brummet (Sarah), Mary Kathryn Brummet, Abigail Anderson (Chris), Josiah Anderson, Bea Anderson, Christian Anderson, Meagan Mosely, Harley Mosley, Levi Geyer, Jesse Ruiz, Sam Ruiz, Casilda Ruiz, Keziah Anderson, Tirzah Anderson, Zipporah Anderson, and Jake Anderson. In addition are her great great grandchildren, Peyton Brummet, Harper Brummet, Christopher Corona, and Ollie Corona.
A graveside service to say goodbye and to celebrate Marie’s life will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens for her immediate family only, due to Covid 19. Pastor Mike Collins will be there to preside. Masks will be mandatory.
