Lieutenant Junior Grade (LtJg) Krepps, graduated from Lewistown High School in 1937. He then was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1942, graduating on 19 December 1941. He was assigned onboard the Battleship USS South Dakota BB57 as a radar officer in the radar plotting room, Fire Control Division. He was killed in action on 15 November 1942 during the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (14-15 November 1942, also referred to the Second Battle of Savo Island). He was buried at sea with his fellow shipmates. Thier ultimate sacrifice prevented the enemy capture of Henderson Field, Guadalcanal thus, contributing to the overall success of the South Pacific Campaign. This was a night engagement where the battleships South Dakota and the Washington along with several destroyers faced a larger enemy force consisting of a bombardment group, an infantry landing force and the Battleship Kirishima. The South Dakota sustained heavy shelling from 14" and 8" naval cannons, while firing and maneuvering onto enemy vessels.
