Served in US Army Air Force in WWII. He earned a BA from Amherst College in 1946, and studied geology at Columbia University, earning an MA in 1950 and a PhD in 1955. He worked for the US Geological Survey from 1951-1958 in the Mojave and Death Valley Desert in CA. He worked as a professor of geology at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1958-61 and at San Diego State University from 1961-71. He joined the San Diego Himalayan Expedition in 1970, making his first trip to Nepal. Starting in 1971 he did international gemstone exploration. He helped found a company in Kathmandu, Nepal called "Himalayan Gems, Nepal" which is still in business.

He married Anne Bradley in 1949 and they had three children; they were divorced in 1971. He remarried in 1971 to Frederique Geoffroy and they had one child together.
