Mary Lee Garrison Knippenberg, 83, formerly of Garland, Texas, passed away peacefully at 5:11am on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, in Round Rock, Texas, after a brief illness.

Mary Lee was born the daughter of Ragsdale and Mamie (Latimer) Garrison on November 24, 1937 in Detroit, Texas. She is preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother David Garrison.

She will be greatly missed by all but most of all by her husband of 51 years, Thomas Knippenberg. She will also be missed by her son and daughter in law, Matthew and Rachel Knippenberg of Frisco, Texas, and her daughter and son in law, Mary and Chase Berry of Pflugerville, Texas. Her grandchildren were her joy and they will dearly miss her as well: Kade and Lexi Knippenberg and Vivienne and Beau Berry. Her loving sisters will miss her deeply, Elizabeth (Claude) Hill of Georgetown, Texas and Kay (David) Montgomery of Hideaway Lake, Texas. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews and countless wonderful friends.

Mary Lee was a child of God. She inspired all around with her closeness with the Lord. While we will selfishly miss her, we rejoice in knowing she is in the arms of Jesus now.

Mary Lee grew up in the small town of Detroit, Texas and had a lifelong love of the town and the people. She was always very close to her parents, brother and sisters and loved them very much. She grew up in a small Southern Baptist Church where she made many warm memories. After graduating high school as salutatorian, she moved to the big city of Dallas, Texas. She got a job as an administrative assistant at Alcoa where she would meet the love of her life, Thomas Knippenberg. Tom was a Yankee, but eventually she did not hold that against him. They married in April of 1969.

Mary Lee was very active in their church, St. Mark Presbyterian in Dallas, where she served as an elder. She was also an accomplished athlete her whole life and kept on with her competitive nature in church softball.

Mary Lee raised her children Matthew and Mary Beth in the most loving home that can be imagined. She was always their biggest cheerleaders, no matter what crazy things they were involved in. She taught her children the importance of trusting in the Lord, an attitude that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, and the importance of loving and serving others.

In retirement, Mary Lee spent peaceful time at their lake house on Lake Cypress Springs, Texas. When she wasn’t doing that, she was going back and forth between her kids’ houses to spoil her beloved grandchildren or traveling with her kids and grandkids on big adventures. She was also very active in the First Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Texas, including the Bible Study program.

We will always remember her beautiful smile that could light up a room, infectious laugh, quick wit, sense of fashion, devotion to her husband and kids, and love for all those around her.

We want to celebrate Mary Lee’s amazing life with all of her loving family and friends. Her family wants to wait until we can all be together safely so there will be a celebration of life for Mary Lee in Summer 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a fund to put a bench at one of her favorite places, the tabernacle in Detroit, Texas.
