Dr. Sally B. Beck (1931-2020)

Sally (Sarah Louise) Beck died on December 7, 2020, at the age of 89 after becoming ill from Covid-19. She was born in Indianapolis on May 16, 1931 and was the daughter of Oliver Godfrey and Else Zorn Bell.

She attended Shortridge High School Class of 1949 and until recent years, Sally maintained several close friends from her class, calling themselves, “The 49er’s”. Sally did her undergraduate work at Butler University where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She received her Master’s and PhD at the University of Illinois, where she was one of very few women in the doctoral program. She met and married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Beck at Trinity Lutheran Church, where she remained a member for several years. In more recent years, she was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Sally and Dick shared married life for 62 years until he passed in 2014.

Sally and Dick returned to Indianapolis after completing their graduate work when Dick became an IUPUI professor and Sally began her career at Butler University in 1962 as a psychology professor and remained teaching there until her retirement in 2006. Sally had a reputation as a “tough grader’ but her classes were some of the first to fill. In recent years, numerous former students continued to keep in touch and even visited her at the Forum where she has resided for the past 4 years. She loved teaching her students and took a very personal interest in them. Several wrote to her over the years, sharing with her that they had become psychologists due to her influence. She made a profound effect on so many and truly had a passion for the field of study, teaching and the students. Sally served as the president of Butler’s first Faculty Assembly. As president, she presided at the bimonthly meetings of over 160 faculty members. Sally enjoyed the balance of teaching, research and private practice but always saw her first responsibility was to Butler University and teaching the students.

Sally served on the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Board for 25 years, serving as its president for 3 of these years. She received the Alumni Achievement Award from Butler University and was selected as “Psychology Role Model” by Reader’s Digest Magazine. She was a member of the American Psychological Association and the Indiana Psychological Association, serving as an officer for 2 years.

Sally is survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean and Greta Beck of Madison, WI; nieces Melissa Iliev, Allison Hyde, and nephews Tyler Beck, Todd Beck, Chris Beck; cousins Diane Shirley of Miamisburg, Ohio and Marsha Reynolds, Indianapolis.

The family wishes to especially thank the Forum’s Memory Care nursing director, Christina, and so many members of the staff who went above and beyond to care for Sally. A private graveside service will be held and a life celebration service will occur in the future.
