Mary Ann Roper was a daughter of Col. John Roper (1782-1858) and his wife Margaret "Peggy" Franklin (1786-1861). Her family were early settlers in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

On 8 April 1821, Mary Ann married George Branner (1796-1847). During the early years of their marriage, they lived at Dandridge, where her father had a hotel and mercantile business. In 1835, they moved to Mossy Creek (now Jefferson City), where Mr. Branner built a store, and what was considered the finest house in East Tennessee in 1838. They had nine children: John Roper Branner (1822-1869), William Alexander Branner (1824-1865), Mary Jane Branner (1826-1904, Mrs. Henry Hubbard), George Michael Branner (1828-1884), Benjamin Manessah Branner (1830-1905), Joseph Ayers Branner (1833-1890), Catherine Juliet Branner (1836-1866, Mrs. George W. Waldrop, later Mrs. Rufus Connell), Maria Theresa Blanche Branner (1842-1876, Mrs. John F. Brazelton) and Josephine Bonaparte Branner (1847-1854).

George Branner died in 1847. On 13 June 1850, Mrs. Branner married William C. Mendenhall (1818-1861). He died in April, 1861, and Mary Ann died on 23 Oct. 1862.
